Jakarta –
The World Health Organization reports dozens of babies infected with the number and deadly virus. This incident occurred in Europe and America.
WHO confirmed that at least 26 babies in Croatia, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden and the UK have been infected with a rare strain of enterovirus, called echovirus-11.
Eight of the babies died, with most of the deaths reported in France following organ failure and sepsis.
“This case is considered unusual due to the extremely rapid deterioration and case-related mortality rate among affected infants,” a WHO spokesperson wrote in a written statement quoted from NBCNewsSaturday (8/7/2023).
Enteroviruses can severely affect newborns, whose immune systems are not mature enough to fight infection. The disease can be spread through feces or by inhaling respiratory droplets, and usually lives in the digestive system.
Health officials in England previously reported a similarly unusual increase in severe myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart, among 10 babies who had another enterovirus called coxsackievirus. At least one died.
“Most enteroviruses cause very mild illness in the children they infect. But in small proportions, we see much more significant catastrophic disease,” said Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of WHO’s health emergencies program.
