Rapid Support Forces in Sudan extend armistice for 72 hours amidst ongoing fighting despite ceasefire declaration

The Rapid Support Forces in Sudan announced, at dawn on Friday, that it had extended the armistice for 72 hours, in response to US-Saudi mediation, at a time when fighting is continuing in Khartoum and other areas in the country despite the existence of a declared calm.

And the official Twitter account wrote:

  • In response to US-Saudi mediation, we announce the extension of the truce for an additional 72 hours, in order to open humanitarian corridors, facilitate the movement of citizens and residents, and enable them to meet their needs and reach safe areas.
  • We affirm our acceptance of the cease-fire request and our commitment to it.
  • We welcome local, regional and international initiatives.
  • The Rapid Support Forces affirmed their strict commitment to the declared truce, calling on the army to do the same.

This development comes after the end of the first day of a 7-day truce, which the Sudanese army announced its approval, noting that the Intergovernmental Authority on Development for East African Countries (IGAD) proposed the truce.

The Rapid Support Forces affirmed their commitment to the humanitarian truce, but did not mention the issue of the seven days.

Fighting continues despite the truce

On the ground, fierce fighting continues between the two sides.

The sounds of shelling and clashes resounded in neighboring Khartoum, Omdurman and Bahri.

“Since yesterday evening and this morning, there have been air strikes and the sounds of clashes,” said Al-Sadiq Ahmed, 49, an engineer from Khartoum.

Residents said that heavy shelling in Khartoum on Thursday hampered efforts to deliver urgently needed aid to stranded civilians, according to the Associated Press.
