Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Since the Covid-19 pandemic, a new phenomenon has appeared in the lakes on the border of North America and Canada. Fish population ‘vampire eel’ suddenly increased significantly.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) report states that the parasitic fish is growing rapidly in five lakes within the Great Lakes.
NOAA reports it preys on trout, whitefish, perch and sturgeon. In fact, this ‘vampire eel’ can make the number of trout that can be caught drastically reduced.
“Within a century, trout fishing has plummeted, largely because of uncontrolled Lamprey breeding,” NOAA said. Science Alert, Saturday (26/8/2023).
The species is actually controlled by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission in conjunction with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. In fact, the number had decreased by 90 percent in parts of the Great Lakes.
However, during the Covid-19 pandemic, which is around 2020 and 2021, species management was constrained. Finally, the population was found to be increasing. Science Alert states that it is still unknown the amount of population increase.
According to a report by a non-profit scientific publication, Undark Magazine, controlling the Sea Lamprey is not easy.
Those in charge of population control were only able to do 25 percent in 2020, but increase to 75 percent the following year.
Wired wrote that the costs incurred for this control are not small, which are estimated to reach US$ 15 million to US$ 20 million, or around IDR 227.42 billion to IDR 303.23 billion per year.
In addition, a timely pesticide, namely lampricide, is needed to reduce the vampire eel population.
