Rapid Increase of HIV/AIDS Cases in Blitar Due to Surge in MSM (Gay) Population

FAJAR.CO.ID — People with HIV/AIDS (ODHA) in the past half year, there have been 114 new cases in Blitar. This figure has increased by almost 100 percent compared to 2022, which only had 140 new cases for a year.

Of the increase in new cases, the status of private employees contributed the highest with 44 cases, followed by housewives with 27 cases, then female sex workers with a total of 9 people.

The increase in the number of PLWHA reached 100%, with the number of PLWHA population in the category of male-to-male relationships (MSM), aka gay, increasing 2-fold.

The phenomenon of sexual orientation deviation has received serious attention from the Blitar District Health Office. The presence of gay people in Blitar is the second largest contributor which triggers an increase in the overall number of PLHIV in Blitar.

The Head of the Blitar Regency Health Service, Christine Indrawati, admitted that her party could not openly monitor the number of valid gays. However, the significant increase was seen when they checked themselves into health services with positive results exposed to the HIV/AIDS virus which was increasing.

He explained that this year there were 29 MSM (gay) infected with HIV/AIDS. Last year there were only 17. This 29 figure is a new case, not an accumulated number. This means that there is a 100% increase from their community alone. And this is only half a year, data collection January-July 2023.

Related to this, a social media activist, Herriy Cahyadi through his Twitter account, @herricahyadi, delivered criticism regarding the dangers of LGBT in a sarcastic tone.
