This year, more and more patients arrived at the Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Iași with health problems caused by enterocolitis.
If last year, in the first seven months, the number of those diagnosed with this condition, and hospitalized, was just over 300, this year, in the same period of time, the number is close to 550. Of the total, over 400 are adults, the rest children.
The patients arrived at the specialist doctor with symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, sometimes accompanied by fever and chills, watery stools, all leading to the alteration of the general condition.
“A possible cause of this increase in the number of patients may be that after the pandemic period, the population unduly relaxed in respect of basic hygiene measures. However, I want to remind everyone to be aware of the fact that delaying the visit to the doctor can in no way have a positive effect, on the contrary,” said Dr. Florin Roșu, the manager of the Iași Infectious Diseases Hospital.

Enterocolitis is an infectious gastrointestinal disorder caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses or intestinal parasites. The mode of transmission is oral through the consumption of contaminated food, non-potable water or even through dirty hands.
Specialists say that enterocolitis can, however, have serious repercussions in infants or the elderly, because it causes severe dehydration that can be life-threatening if a doctor is not reached urgently.
