Varane says pass. “It is with a sense of pride and fulfillment that I announce my departure from the game we all love.”
At the end of July, Varane signed a contract with the Serie A newcomer, but a dozen or so days later he suffered a serious knee injury after only 20 minutes of playing in his debut in this club – in the Coppa Italia against Samdporia Genoa (1-1, penalties 3-4). The injury turned out to be so serious that Como did not include the Frenchman on the list of players for the Serie A season.
“Throughout my career, I have taken on many challenges and met expectations, even though most of them seemed impossible. I was accompanied by incredible emotions, experienced a special moment and collected memories for a lifetime. With this in mind, I announce the separation from the game we all love, with a sense of pride and accomplishment,” Varane wrote.
The Frenchman started his senior career with Lens in 2010. A year later, he moved to Real Madrid, whose colors he defended until 2021. During this time he was, among others, he was the Spanish champion three times and won the Champions League and the Club World Championship four times. He spent the next three years at Manchester United, with whom he won the FA Cup in May.
He added that he did not want to continue his career if he could not do it at his highest level.
“Listening to your heart, to your instincts, takes a lot of courage. I have fallen and gotten up thousands of times, but this is a moment to stop, hang up my boots after my last match (at Manchester United – editor’s note), in which I won a trophy at Wembley,” he emphasized.
Gold and silver at the World Championships. “I wouldn’t change anything”
With the national team, in which he played 93 games and scored five goals, he triumphed in the World Cup in 2018 and in the Nations League three years later. In the 2022 World Championships in Qatar, he won a silver medal after the final defeat in a penalty shootout against Argentina.
“I don’t regret anything, I wouldn’t change anything. I won more trophies than I dreamed of, but above all I am proud that I have always been true to my principles, always been honest and tried to leave every place better than I found it. I hope I gave you reasons to be proud,” he wrote.
As he announced, he will stay in Como, but not as a footballer. He will announce the details of his new role soon.
