Raphaël Pitti: Addressing the Catastrophic Medical Situation in Gaza and the Disregard for International Conventions

What message will you bring this Wednesday, to the conference organized by the Rotary interclub of North Moselle ?

Raphaël Pitti : “I will first of all recall the context and the commitment of my NGO Mehad (formerly Union of Relief and Medical Care Organizations-UOSSM). Commitment which has led us to go, over the last ten years, to Syria and Ukraine, where we have two training centers, but also to Turkey, where there was also an earthquake, just like in Morocco. And then there is the subject that concerns us today, the war in Palestine. »

What news do you have about what is happening on the ground in Gaza?

“There, the medical situation is catastrophic: lack of medical equipment, medicines, fuel oil, overwhelmed doctors… We have never stopped denouncing this situation, demanding an immediate ceasefire. Health structures are no longer sacred at all, they are systematically bombed, like at the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza. I am going to discuss in Thionville the regression into which we have entered, as well as all the international conventions which protected structures and populations, and which are no longer respected. »

“All international conventions which protected structures and populations are no longer respected”

What links do you have with the Palestinian medical world?

“Our NGO has been in contact for a very long time with Palestinian medical associations, such as ArabMed (doctors of Arab origin in Europe) and PalMed (association of Palestinian doctors). However, it is currently impossible to enter there. However, we believe it is necessary to support them. »

How can you imagine providing assistance to Gaza if for the moment you cannot enter there?

“PalMed launched a platform where doctors could register and visit. Our NGO volunteered and we are still waiting. At a higher level, we created a collective of fourteen international NGOs to try to obtain authorization to return to Gaza. Status quo for the moment. We were received by the diplomatic cell of the Élysée two days before President Marcon’s departure for Israel. We were blown away by his position, that of proposing an international coalition against Hamas. We are disappointed with France’s position. »

Conference by Raphaël Pitti Wednesday November 22, at 7:30 p.m., Val Marie room.
