Raphael Dwamena, Ghanaian Striker, Dies at 28 During Albanian Championship Game

Ghanaian striker Raphael Dwamena, 28, died this Saturday during a game in the Albanian Championship. With a history of heart problems, he fainted on the field and couldn’t resist on the way to the hospital.

Dwamena, who played for Egnatia, had a spell in Spanish football, where he played for Levante and Zaragoza. In 2017, he was close to signing with Brigthon, but the English club detected a cardiac arrhythmia during medical examinations and withdrew the signing.

In 2021, when he was a player for Blau-Weiss, in Austria, Dwamena had already felt ill during a game, but survived thanks to a defibrillator implanted in his heart – similar to the one that Eriksen, from Manchester United, has.

The game this Saturday, between Egnatia and Partizani, was interrupted in the first half. The other matches in the Albanian Championship round have been suspended.
