Former cricket star and now Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is in dire straits these days after making a controversial statement accusing women of raping very few people. It writes The Guardian.
The statement came as a whole interview, where journalist Jonathan Swan asked the Prime Minister about the ongoing wave of rapes in Pakistan. To which Khan replied:
– If a woman wears very little clothing, then it can affect how the man looks at her, unless he is a robot. It is widely known, says the Prime Minister during the interview.

Requires apology
The allegation has provoked strong reactions in the country, and several women’s rights activists in the country are now demanding that Khan make a public apology.
Especially because he has not elaborated on what he means by “women wearing little clothes”, in a country where large parts of the female population wear conservative traditional garments.
Several demonstrations are being held in the country, and this weekend several demonstrations have been organized in the cities of Karachi and Lahore.

Activist groups in the country say it is dangerous for the prime minister to make such a statement, because it strengthens the general perception that women are “knowing” victims, and men are “helpless” perpetrators.
In a statement, which is published on Twitter, says politician Maryam Nawaz, who is also the daughter of the former prime minister of the country, that Khan is a person who makes excuses for rape, and that people who validate rape have the same mindset as the perpetrator.

Earlier this year, the prime minister also issued a statement urging women to cover up to prevent rape. Then there were also strong reactions from women’s rights groups who thought he was ignorant, according to The Guardian.

In a Twitter post, she states that she is upset that Khan places the blame on the women’s clothing.
