Shakespeare was first arrested in the summer of 2021, 31 years after the rape of the then 18-year-old girl in Gloucestershire, England.
Last summer, the 66-year-old was arrested for another crime. It was then that the police discovered that Shakespeare’s DNA matched what was found at the scene after the rape.
On Monday, January 17, he was sentenced to nine years in prison.
The murder mystery from 1959 has been solved
– Traumatized
The 18-year-old girl was out walking her dog when Shakespeare approached her. He was armed with a large, sharp stick when he suddenly grabbed the girl’s arm and pulled her into a bush.
Shakespeare then raped the girl and threatened to kill her if she told anyone.
– Do not say anything, otherwise I will kill you, he is said to have said repeatedly.
In a statement, the girl says that she has been so traumatized after the attack that she has tried to take her own life.
– I felt embarrassed, offended and dirty. I’ve never been able to tell my mom what happened to me. I have carried these feelings for 31 years, the statement says.
– The rape will haunt me for the rest of my life. I’ve never been as scared as I was that day. I did not know if I was going to survive.
