Rape in Brazil: Alarming Increase in 2022 with Over 8 per Hour, Says Brazilian Forum of Public Security

The number of rapes in Brazil increased by 8.2 percent in 2022. With 74,930 rapes, that equates to more than eight per hour. More than 60 percent of the victims were under the age of fourteen and 10 percent under the age of four.

This is according to a report by the Brazilian Forum of Public Security (FBSP). The NGO collected data from police records and other official documents. Nearly 70 percent of rapes happened in the victims’ homes.

According to the NGO, the situation is actually even worse than what emerges from the report. “A large number of rapes go unreported, so it is quite possible that the situation is worse than the data shows,” FBSP coordinator Juliana Martins told the news agency. AFP.

Martins thinks the corona pandemic has also influenced the sharp increase in the number of reported rapes. According to her, victims have since been more willing to report. “During the pandemic, schools were closed for a long time and victims were locked up with their attackers,” says Martins. “With the reopening of schools, the number of complaints increased.”

Also more murders and domestic violence

The number of murders of women and reports of domestic violence against women also increased, according to the NGO. With 1,437 femicides, the number was 6.1 percent higher than in 2021. In addition, there were 245,713 cases of domestic violence. That is an increase of 2.9 percent compared to the previous year.

It is possible that corona has an effect on the percentages. For example, fewer reports may have been made in 2021.

Like this describes UNICEF in a study from 2016 to 2020, a decrease in that last year. This turned out to be mainly due to a dip in the number of reports in the months of March and May: the months when social distancing measures were the strictest in Brazil. “This decline is likely due to an increase in underreporting rather than a reduction in incidents.”
