On May 20, the second “rap AKApella” concert of the series of events will take place in Koknese, in the Likteņdārza Saieta House, in which two Latvian hip-hop artists – Arturs Skutelis and indigo – will take part, the Koknese Foundation informs.
The cycle of events “rap AKApella” is special, it offers listeners a unique experience – to hear the lyrics of artists’ songs without musical accompaniment. “Nowadays, hip-hop is very different,” says Arturs Skutelis. “Performances are often also held as shows, in which the central component of rap – that is, text and work with language – already becomes secondary, light, projections, etc. are brought to the fore. The concert on May 20 is something completely different – the emphasis will be on rap as the art of words, showing the beauty of the Latvian language.”
Reciting, or rapping, is a vital part of hip-hop. In the events of the “rap AKApella” cycle, it is possible to perceive the textual message much more directly, because the tempo dynamics and accents are dictated by the performers themselves, not the musical accompaniment. Visitors to the cycle have the opportunity to hear the performances of rap masters in a much more direct and intimate atmosphere. Ansis and Finķis took the stage at the first event of the cycle.
“The acapella format gives even hardened listeners of the genre the opportunity to hear something new even in known lyrics, because the accents of the performance’s message are often arranged in a completely different way,” says music producer and performer Gustavo. “For listeners who are just getting to know the hip-hop genre and the work of its authors/performers, this is the most real opportunity, because the lyrics in this format sound much brighter.”
“It’s a very special feeling for a rapper to fill a room with only his presence and voice and make an adventure out of it,” shares rapper ansis, his impressions after the first concert of the “rap AKApella” series. “At some moments, I felt inspired by the “acapella battle” rap performances, which I have never had the chance to try in my life, but which I have always found attractive as a format. If you come to the next events, be sure to go – people seem to mostly in the end, they didn’t understand what they had come for and how it would work, which probably worked in our favor, because, I think, we slightly exceeded the expectations of those present.”

Arturs Skutelis is one of the best-known Latvian hip-hop musicians and lyricists, founder of the studio and creative association PKI, leader of the live music group “Tvērumi”, philologist and cultural journalist. He was nominated for the “Austra Award”, “Golden Microphone”, Aleksandar Čaks Award, won the Latvian Hip-Hop of the Year award several times and other awards. Skutelas’ latest solo album “Jā” was released in the spring of 2022.
Until now, the rapper indigo was known to the general public as theater and film actor Igors Shelegovskis. He has been writing songs since he was a teenager, but he released his debut album “False impression” in the fall of 2022.
