CLICK BUDGET – Apple faces a ransomware request after a group of cyber criminals steal secret plans for the company’s upcoming product from a supplier.
The “Sodin” group, which makes and runs a ransomware called REvil, said they stole plans from Quanta Computer, a Taiwanese company that assembles Apple laptops.

Like regular ransomware, REvil encrypts the victim’s files and asks for payment to receive an encryption key and recover data. But Sodin has gone a step further, trying to steal the file itself and extorting payments from those with backups by threatening to publish confidential data.
According to a statement posted on the criminal’s dark website – which they call the “Happy Blog” – Quanta refused to pay the ransom, causing hackers to start threatening the company’s customers.

The hackers claim that among the stolen documents were plans for a pair of Apple laptops, a new Apple Watch, and a new Lenovo ThinkPad. To back up their statement, they’ve posted a set of blueprints for several products, including a scheme for the new iMac the company launched on Tuesday.
The ransomware request was originally posted just hours before the company’s launch event, and the hackers said they would release more documents every day, adding: “We recommend that Apple repurchase available data by May 1.” A similar blackmail attempt by the same group, aimed at Acer, is demanding $ 50 million in exchange for deleting files.
