Ransomware Hackers Steal Plans for Upcoming Apple Products

CLICK BUDGET – Apple faces a ransomware request after a group of cyber criminals steal secret plans for the company’s upcoming product from a supplier.

The “Sodin” group, which makes and runs a ransomware called REvil, said they stole plans from Quanta Computer, a Taiwanese company that assembles Apple laptops.

Time is running out, hopefully the entire crew of the Nenggala 402 submarine will be saved soon

Like regular ransomware, REvil encrypts the victim’s files and asks for payment to receive an encryption key and recover data. But Sodin has gone a step further, trying to steal the file itself and extorting payments from those with backups by threatening to publish confidential data.

According to a statement posted on the criminal’s dark website – which they call the “Happy Blog” – Quanta refused to pay the ransom, causing hackers to start threatening the company’s customers.

“In order not to wait for Apple’s upcoming presentation, today we, the REvil group, will provide data on the upcoming release of the company which is very much liked by many,” the blog said. “Tim Cook can thank you, Quanta. From our side, a lot of time has been devoted to solving this problem. “

The hackers claim that among the stolen documents were plans for a pair of Apple laptops, a new Apple Watch, and a new Lenovo ThinkPad. To back up their statement, they’ve posted a set of blueprints for several products, including a scheme for the new iMac the company launched on Tuesday.

The ransomware request was originally posted just hours before the company’s launch event, and the hackers said they would release more documents every day, adding: “We recommend that Apple repurchase available data by May 1.” A similar blackmail attempt by the same group, aimed at Acer, is demanding $ 50 million in exchange for deleting files.

Internet users are already starting to delve into the details of the leak, noting differences with the current model being sold: a new version of the MacBook Pro is shown without the company’s controversial “Touch Bar,” for example, and the potential returns of an HDMI port, SD card reader, and MagSafe connectivity to the machine.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
