Jakarta –
RANS islands after Persikabo 1973 and Bhayangkara Presisi Indonesia they were relegated to League 2. This club even though it was in the top 5 in the middle of the season.
RANS islands relegated after losing 2-3 to PSM Makassar in the final week of Liga 1 2023/24, Tuesday (30/4/2024). Collecting 35 points, RANS is three points behind Arema FC in 15th place with 38 points.
The retreat RANS islands to League 2 cannot be separated from the team’s poor performance in the second round. Kushedya Yudo Cs went winless in 17 matches in the second round, winning just five points from five draws and 12 losses.
This is a stark contrast to their performance in the first round, which was surprising. The Phoenix even closed the first round in 5th place with 30 points from eight wins, six draws and only three losses.
The disaster of the second round started with a loss against Persikabo with a score of 1-2. After that, RANS did not win again until they finally sacked coach Eduardo Almeida after the match in Week 26 of League 1.
As another, RANS appointed Francis Wewengkang as caretaker for three matches. The coaching chair then passed to Alfredo Vera who was responsible for building the team for the remaining five League 1 games.
Neither Wewengkang nor Vera was able to get RANS out of their slump. Victory was still hard to come by so in the end they had to be willing to go down to League 2.
“In this game (PSM vs RANS), in the first half we had a chance to score first through a penalty, but it didn’t go in and we don’t know why,” said Vera.
“Then we conceded and got a goal back, one goal difference. Yes, every player knows exactly what kind of situation the team is in, although we try to be harder,” he said.
For Vera, this is the second time in the last two years that he has not saved his team from relegation. He also had a similar experience when Persipura Jayapura were relegated to League 2 in the final week of League 1 2021/22.
