Yesterday 21:21 — Technologies & AutoExperts named the most reliable and most problematic cars in different classes
The popularity of used cars is growing in Europe for several reasons, including the reluctance of many motorists to switch to electric vehicles, the limited supply of relatively new models due to the pandemic, and the demand for environmentally friendly used cars for use in low emission areas.
This means it’s more important than ever to choose your used car wisely, and reliability is a critical factor in reducing costs – especially if you’re buying a used car that’s no longer covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. This is where this reliability study comes in handy.
To help used car buyers choose the best models between the ages of six and 20, What Car, in collaboration with MotorEasy, asked nearly 25,000 car owners to report how reliable their cars were over the previous 24 months. Let’s look at the results, class by class:
The most reliable small cars
1st place: Honda Jazz (2015-2020) – 100% reliability rating.
The third generation Jazz offers the low running costs you’d expect from a small car, plus the space and practicality of a mini SUV. In addition, it is unlikely to let you down, because it is extremely reliable. According to the owners who took part in the survey, the Jazz did not have a single malfunction.
2nd place: Toyota Yaris (2011-2020) – 98.6% reliability rating. 3rd place: Suzuki Swift (2010-2017) – 98.1% reliability rating.
The least reliable small cars
1. Citroën C3 (2010-2016) – 53.0% reliability rating.
What goes wrong? Air conditioning, brakes – 13%, engine, exhaust system, gearbox / clutch, suspension – 9%, battery, engine electricity, fuel system, navigator, steering – 4%. The C3s that were reported had a wide range of problems, but the most common problems were with the air conditioning and braking system.
Because of them, more than 50% of the cars became unsuitable for driving, and 40% of them stood in the garage for more than a week. The only good news is that 10% of broken cars were repaired for free and 43% of bills were under £200, but the rest of the owners had to find between £201 and £750 to have their cars repaired.
2nd place: Ford Fiesta (2002-2008) – 65.5% reliability rating. 3rd place: Nissan Micra (2010-2016) – 66.4% reliability rating.

Most Reliable Family Cars 1st: Mazda 3 (2014-2019) – 99.3% reliability rating.
The Mazda 3 is a great family car with a range of economical yet powerful engines. If you choose a petrol model, it must also be very reliable. Only 4% of the vehicles reported in the study were faulty, and the only problem was the electrical system, not related to the engine. Diesel versions, however, don’t do as well with reliability. All of the damaged vehicles were rideable and were all repaired in a day or less. Even better, all repairs cost no more than £50, so no owner was left without money.
2nd place: Honda Civic gasoline (2012-2017) – reliability rating 96.2%. 3rd place: Hyundai i30 (2012-2017) – reliability rating 94.9%.
Least Reliable Family Cars
1st place: Vauxhall Astra petrol (2009-2015) – 50.5% reliability rating.
Gasoline-powered Asters are much more prone to problems than diesel ones, with 44% of cars reported failing compared to 29% of diesels. The most common were problems with the brakes, air conditioning and engine, followed by problems with the battery, bodywork, electrical, exhaust system, gearbox and suspension.
Luckily, renovation bills were mostly modest, with 70% of the work costing no more than £300, although some owners shelled out up to £1,500. Three-quarters of the cars were still rideable, and most were back from the workshop in less than a week.
2nd place: Volkswagen Golf diesel (2003-2009) – reliability rating 66.1%. 3rd place: Volkswagen Golf (2009-2013) – reliability rating 68.1%.
Most Reliable Executive Cars
1st place: Ford Mondeo (2014-2022) – reliability rating 98.3
The Mondeo has never been as attractive as an Audi or a BMW, but it has one advantage over premium executive cars – near-perfect reliability. Only 3% of people who completed the reliability survey said their vehicle had failed in the last 24 months, and the only areas that caused problems were non-engine electrical systems.
All of the defective vehicles were rideable and all repairs were completed in less than a week. The only downside to this company is that none of the work was done for free, so the owners had to seek between £301 and £500 to cover the cost of repairs.
2nd place: Toyota Avensis (2009-2015) – reliability rating 95.6%. 3rd place: BMW 3 Series gasoline (2012-2019) – reliability rating 93.3%.
