Nuremberg/Munich – Now the pilots are speaking!
The “Vereinigung Cockpit” (association of flight captains) looked at the airports in Germany and rated them in terms of their safety. The result for the Bavarian airports is very different!
The undisputed leader among the 28 airports examined is Munich’s Franz-Josef-Strauß Airport in the Erdinger Moos. It has been leading the pilots’ safety rankings for years, with an average score of 1.64.
However, Leipzig Airport is hot on his heels (grade 1.66), followed by Stuttgart (1.73). There was also a one before the decimal point for the airports in Erfurt, Cologne/Bonn, Kassel, Frankfurt-Hahn, Münster/Osnabrück and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden.

On the other hand, the performance of Albrecht Dürer Airport in Nürnberger Knoblauchsland is less pleasing. The airport, built in 1955, got a rating of 2.24 – that means only 16th place.
The airport in Memmingen has to be located even further behind. Its average score of 2.57 makes it one of the six most unsafe airports in Germany. Only Heringsdorf on Usedom, Friedrichshafen Saarbrücken, Mannheim and Düsseldorf-Weeze fared worse.
Three factors in particular were evaluated:

During the “Runway Excursion”, measures were examined to prevent the runway from deviating or overshooting.
The “runway incursion” is about a safe and stable approach to the runway using a precise approach procedure.
With the “Taxi Occurrence”, the Cockpit Association examined whether a precision approach procedure with horizontal and vertical guidance is possible.
Overall, however, all German airports are considered safe, the worst rating was 2.91. The minimum requirement for a safe airport is a four.
