Ranking NBA’s Most Awarded Teams: Lakers and Celtics Lead the Pack

The 2022-2023 NBA season saw the Denver Nuggets claim the first title in their history. But which are the teams with the most extensive awards?

LOS ANGELES LAKERS (17 TITRES)

At the top of the NBA, two legendary teams sit enthroned: the Lakers and the Celtics. Two cities and above all two cultures at the antipodes. For the moment, the duel between them is a draw, since the Angelinos and the Celtics have 17 titles each.

The Lakers have thus been titled in 1949, 1950, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1972, 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2010 and finally, in 2020.

Boston Celtics (17)

The Celtics have also written some of the most beautiful pages in the NBA, with in particular an indecent domination in the 60s, where they won 11 titles in 13 seasons, including eight consecutive from 1959 to 1966. In total, they were titled in 1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1974, 1976, 1981, 1984, 1986 and in 2008.

Golden State Warriors (7)

Last year, the Warriors pulled off a feat and overtook the Bulls to win their seventh title. The Californians were champions in 1947, 1956 and 1975, before the dynasty of recent years, in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2021.

Chicago Bulls (6)

Six titles in total for the Windy City franchise, which places it on the podium ex-aequo. Titles all conquered under the leadership of “His Airness” Michael Jordan in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1998

San Antonio Spurs (5)

Spurs have one of the best records of the past 25 years, with five titles won in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014.

Miami Heat (3)

The Heat is a recent team, founded in 1988, but it has managed to create a solid track record, with three titles, acquired in 2006, 2012 and 2013 thanks to a trio made up of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

Philadelphia Sixers (3)

The Sixers have been crowned three times (1955, 1967 and 1983). During this last title, the duo composed of Julius Erving and Moses Malone was simply unplayable.

Detroit Pistons (3)

The Pistons were crowned in 1989 and 1990, when the Bad boys reigned terror in the league. The 2004 title, on the other hand, surprised all observers, since it seemed promised to the Lakers led by Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. But opposite, Ben Wallace, Rip Hamilton, Chauncey Billups and Rasheed Wallace put up an iron defense to win 4-1.

MILWAUKEE BUCKS (2)

The Giannis Bucks doubled the lead in 2021, fifty years after the title won in 1971 by a team led by Lew Alcindor, who would become the legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The team joined the very closed club (3 teams) of twice titled.

Houston Rockets (2)

Thank you Hakeem Olajuwon, main architect of the two titles won by the Rockets, in 1994 and 1995. And thank you also to Michael Jordan, who had retired from sport at that time.

New york Knicks (2)

The many Knicks fans are desperately waiting for a third title, after the two won in 1970 and 1973. We will still have to wait, even if the 2020-2021 epic has given them hope.

Toronto Raptors (1)

Like the Heat, the Raptors are a recent team, created in 1995, which has failed to occupy the foreground. The arrival of star Kawhi Leonard changed everything, on the shores of Lake Ontario, with this unexpected title won in 2019.

Cleveland Cavaliers (1)

The LeBron James touch. After winning two titles with Miami, the Chosen One set sail for its native state, Ohio. Perfectly supported by Kyrie Irving, he offered a title to a city that had dreamed of it since its arrival in the big league.

Dallas Mavericks (1)

A fantastic epic, masterfully led by the German Dirk Nowitzki in 2011. While the title seemed promised to the fantastic Big Three of Miami, the Mavs stood up as one man, with a series won 4-2.

Oklahoma City Thunder (1)

A somewhat complicated story, since the Thunder actually has a title in its pocket, but it was conquered in 1979, when the team had another name, the Supersonics, and played in another city, Seattle.

Washington Wizards (1)

Only one title conquered in 1978, when the Wizards were still nicknamed the Bullets. A name that was changed in 1997, to avoid controversy around the shootings in the United States.

Portland Trail blazers (1)

This title owes a lot to Bill Walton, who dominated the final between the Blazers and the Sixers in 1977.

Atlanta Hawks (1)

A title that dates back to the end of the 1950s, in 1958 to be exact. Trae Young’s troops now want to add a new line to their list.

Sacramento Kings (1)

A title so old (1951) that only franchise fans and league historians still remember.

Denver Nuggets (1)

By winning in the 2023 NBA Finals against the Miami Heat (4-1), the Denver Nuggets, led by the incredible Nikola Jokic, have indeed engraved their name on the famous Larry O’Brien trophy.
