Rani- The Real Story: An Empowering Tale of Women’s Strength and Resilience

Thiruvananthapuram: ‘Rani’ is an experience of women’s power… ‘Rani- The Real Story’ directed by Shankar Ramakrishnan was screened at Pancharatna Parampara at Surya Festival. Produced by Magic Tail Works Productions, the film excels not only in its subject matter but also in the extraordinary performances of its 5 powerful actresses. Rani is an exciting story of a housemaid who is branded as responsible for the murder of a powerful political leader… The plot revolves around 5 women from different walks of life who have met each other in life and the housemaid stays in front of the law to stand firm and fight.

As the film moves forward by interweaving emotional moments in an investigative setting, the extraordinary talent of the 5 Malayalam actresses is also evident. Newcomer Niyathi Kadambiam who played the role of a housemaid along with Urvashi, Bhavana, Anumol, Honey Rose and Mala Pavathi is winning the hearts of the audience. Minnal Murali, playing the role of a political leader, Guru Somasundara, Indrans, Maniyanpilaraju, Ashwin Gopinath, Krishnan Balakrishnan, Ambi Neenasam and Aswat Lal live their characters, not only expanding the visual language of a woman-centric film, but also questioning the instabilities of the present.

Rani- The Real Story is the first film venture of Magictale Works, a major contributor to the museum sector and its technical installations. The film, which was released in the last week of September, attracted the attention of the family audience. Written and directed by Shankar Ramakrishnan, it also has the distinction of being the first film in the series of the female collective.

Rani reflects the image of the nameless, faceless and marginalized human beings beyond gender. As well as being female-centred, it also experimented with the formal structures of storytelling, making visual language a rare commodity. The fact that 24-year-old Mena Melet, a native of Kasaragod, is the music director also makes ‘Rani’ even more brilliant. Beyond celebrating femininity, ‘Rani’ shares the strength and relevance of community that puts forward the extraordinary power of women. The film is not only about 6 women but also analyzes the men around them, environment and time.
