Apple will eventually implement the new serial number system that should have gone into effect last year. From an internal AppleCare memo intercepted by MacRumors, the serial numbers of the manufacturer’s next devices will consist of a string of 8 to 14 random alphanumeric characters. The serial numbers of existing products will not change.
The current nomenclature allows service providers, as well as the user, to determine the location of production (the first three characters), year and week of production (the next two characters), model, color and capacity storage (the last four characters make up a “configuration code”).
Future serial numbers will not allow any of this. Apple does not give a specific reason for this change, perhaps it is a way to reduce cases of fraud. This novelty was leaked in January 2020 and should have appeared at the end of the year.
