Ranchers ask Senasa to remove the ban on moving farms for 21 days due to vaccination

The ranchers of southern Mendoza submitted a request to the National Agrifood Health and Quality Service (Senasa) so that Eliminate the obligation to retain calves for 21 days to apply the second dose of the foot-and-mouth disease vaccine.

The declaration of an agricultural emergency for the sector in Mendoza due to the drought is the main argument that supports the request of the producers.

They maintain that the deterioration of the “corporal state of the rodeo” will be very great if the restriction has to be complied with and it may even cause the loss of bellies.

The request that came from the chambers of San Rafael and General Alvear was endorsed by the Livestock Cluster and the members that make up the Provincial Animal Health Commission of Mendoza (Coprosamen), which is chaired by Damián Carbó, Provincial Director of Livestock.

In the note sent to Esteban Zapata, head of Senasa in Cuyo, the producers explain that the vaccination campaign in Mendoza comes just at the time of calving and weaning of the calves.

With the prevailing drought, which despite the rains that precipitated in the last month, “were late” and have not yet managed to reverse the situation, for which “the body condition of the bellies is compromised, leading to great mortality in some areas ”.

Given this scenario, the farmers explained that “the first measure to take in these circumstances is to quickly wean the calves to preserve the life of the bellies and secondly, to be able to impregnate them if the drought were reversed in the short term”.

“In our production system, carrying out the vaccination campaign implies confinement movements (closing of aguadas) which generates stress and loss of body condition that aggravates the current situation of the rodeo repeating this at 21 days to be able to sell the calves,” the document continued.

Due to the problems that the sector faces derived from the drought that affects the entire country “We urgently request the removal of the 21 days for both internal movement and revaccination to other provinces.

For ranchers, remove the 21-day restriction.”would not compromise health status because our area, naturally, It is not conducive to the development of foot-and-mouth disease”.

The explanation of the producers

“All the ranchers supported the request to Senasa. It is necessary to be able to move the farm without waiting those 21 days, in order to sell. At this time it is difficult to retain them that time. In addition, we have been vaccinating for years, so the health status would not be compromised either.”, said Roberto Ríos, president of the Livestock Cluster.

“Vaccination coincides that we are at this time in the weaning season and we need to remove the calves, sell them or take them elsewhere (field, farm, for food) but they won’t let you because you have to wait 21 days to carry out the revaccination”, said Ramiro Labay, president of the specific Livestock section of the Alvear Chamber of Commerce.

“These are not normal times. we are going through an extreme context due to drought and we need unconventional measures because if not, the negative consequences for the sector can be very harmful”, affirmed Labay.

“We believe that between Monday and next Tuesday we could have an answer from Senasa”, Ríos was hopeful.

Vaccination

The vaccination campaign against foot-and-mouth disease and brucellosis is scheduled to begin on February 13. The cost of each dose is $648.
