On Tuesday, the city of Rancagua dressed up to celebrate the 246th anniversary of the birth of Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme, father of the nation and central figure in Chile’s independence.
The commemoration, organized by the Chilean Army Aviation Brigade (BAVE), took place in the emblematic Plaza de Los Héroes and included a civic-military parade that brought together regional authorities and the Rancagua community.
Every August 20, the entire country remembers the birth of Bernardo O’Higgins, but in O’Higgins this date takes on a special meaning. The region, which bears its name in honor of the father of the country, keeps alive a tradition that brings together and unites the inhabitants of Rancagua, a historic city that witnessed important events during the struggle for Chile’s independence.
The commemorative event was led by the Presidential Delegate, Fabio López, and the Commander of the BAVE, Brigadier General Juan Solari. During the ceremony, the importance of O’Higgins in national history and his legacy for the region were highlighted.
As a sign of respect and admiration, floral offerings were placed at the foot of the Liberator’s monument, a gesture that symbolizes the deep appreciation that the community feels for his figure.
Brigadier General Juan Solari stressed the importance of this date for the Army and for the city of Rancagua, emphasizing that “the birthday of General Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme is a very important date for the Army and it was precisely in this historic square where one of the most important events in the history of the country took place.” Likewise, the uniformed officer highlighted the historical importance of Rancagua, a city that has played a crucial role in the most significant moments of Chile’s independence.
The civic-military parade was a reflection of the commitment of the community and local institutions to keep the memory of Bernardo O’Higgins alive, thus reaffirming his legacy as a fundamental pillar in the construction of the Chilean nation.
