Rancagüina triumphs in the twelfth edition of the Patagonian International Marathon – 2024-09-10 10:45:13

With representatives from 38 nationalities and 15 regions of Chile, the Patagonian International Marathon held its twelfth edition. The historic race in Torres del Paine National Park brought together athletes, fans and travelers with the same dream: to run in one of the most pristine places on the planet.

The unpredictable weather, which is characteristic of the race, once again surprised the competitors. The heavy rain in the early morning in Puerto Natales was countered by the intermittent sunshine that gradually cleared the sky in Torres del Paine.

One of the stars of the day was Giannina Escanilla, who traveled from the O’Higgins region to Magallanes to compete in the 10K. After 55 minutes and 54 seconds, the runner from Rancagua was the first woman to cross the finish line.

“I didn’t expect it (to win the women’s 10k), I just ran excited about the place and the landscapes. I tried to give it my all and I worked hard because the climbs were very difficult. I’m happy about the achievement, I found out at the finish line and I couldn’t believe it,” she said after receiving the medal.

Likewise, the teacher from the Manso de Velasco School said that “The route was unforgettable. At one point I took out my cell phone and I wanted to record the whole time, but the images will remain in my memory. I am proud of my achievements and of being able to understand that I am capable. I thank my work that authorized me to come and my parents (John Escanilla and Ana Margarita Ortiz) who accompanied me and who have instilled sport in me.”

In addition, her father also ran the 10K. He reached the finish line in 50 minutes and 13 seconds and was fifth overall, as well as second in his category (50 to 59 years old): “I didn’t know this place and it’s spectacular… My daughter encouraged me and said “dad, I signed you up,” so I said “let’s go.” I’m very excited because one is 60 years old and she is 20 and something. I congratulate her and I hope she keeps going because sport is very beautiful,” he said minutes before the awards ceremony.

The Patagonian International Marathon runners enjoyed the impressive panoramic views of the main mountains in the area: Cerro Paine Grande, Cuernos del Paine, Monte Almirante Nieto and Torres del Paine. It was a day they will never forget.
