Ramzan Kadyrov’s Controversial Statement on Riots in Dagestan

Ramzan Kadyrov, president of Chechnya and a close ally of Vladimir Putin, is not known to mince words in his public statements.

After the riots in Makhachkala in the Russian sub-republic of Dagestan on Sunday, where a crowd entered the airport when an Israeli plane was about to land, Kadyrov is rattling his sabers again.

– I’m not kidding

According to the state-run Russian news agency Ria Novostithe Chechen president launches the following antidote to the riots:

– Fire three warning shots in the air and after that, if the person does not comply with the law, put a bullet in his forehead, he told representatives of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs and the National Guard, as reported by Ria Novosti.

Debts on Ukraine

Like Dagestan, Chechnya is also located in the North Caucasus, a Russian region where the majority of the population is Muslim.

In the aftermath of the riots on Sunday, Vladimir Putin blamed Ukraine and “Western intelligence services” for whipping up the mood in the region on social media.

Kadryov has also made similar statements:

– You must never believe in Russia’s enemies and undermine the situation from within, he says, according to Ria Novosti.

The statements from both Putin and Kadyrov have been picked up by the American think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW)which publishes daily reports on, among other things, the war in Ukraine.

Authoritarian control

ISW believes that the statements indicate concern about the weakening of authoritarian control in the peripheral zone of Russia, such as in the North Caucasus.

Rejects the rumours: – Visited uncle

– Kadyrov’s reaction to the riots in Dagestan suggests, firstly, that he is concerned with maintaining the perception of unwavering support for Putin, and secondly, demonstrating the strength of his authoritarian rule in Chechnya, by threatening violent responses to potential future riots , ISW writes in the analysis that was published on Wednesday night.

The riots at the airport in Makhachkala were triggered after planes had landed from the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.

Over 20 people were injured and at least 83 have been imprisoned, according to local officials, writes NTB. The independent website Caucasion Knot writes that the damage at the airport is estimated at 285 million roubles, about NOK 33 million.
