Ramy Bensebaini’s Struggles Continue: A Disappointing Performance for BVB in Frankfurt

This game was one to forget for Ramy Bensebaini!

In the wild 3-3 draw in Frankfurt on Sunday, the Algerian showed a miserable performance and was widely criticized.

“Defensively a major weak point,” wrote the WAZ. “Almost every Eintracht attack went through his side. (…). Desolate appearance. Grade: 6.″

“Terrible play from the left-back,” reported Spox. “Eintracht went deep on his side several times and was always dangerous! Grade: 6.″

“The Algerian was completely overwhelmed. Grade: 5″, rated the Ruhrnachrichten.

In fact, the BVB perennial favorite seemed totally overwhelmed in the Frankfurt city forest. With a view to Saturday’s classic against Bayern (6.30 p.m.), the star signing is threatened with the bench if his poor form continues!

“It was clear that the Frankfurt team were much more successful on this side,” said sports director Sebastian Kehl, who signed the 28-year-old professional from Borussia Mönchengladbach on a free transfer in the summer. “We made mistakes today.”

The BVB boss said that Bensebaini had “already played stable games during the season”, but he could “solve some situations better”.

Bensebaini? Not the only culprit

“It’s true that we repeatedly allowed Frankfurt to make breakthroughs on this side,” criticized coach Edin Terzic. “But we didn’t defend well as a unit. The rooms behind it kept opening because we didn’t trigger properly.”

Bensebaini is certainly not solely to blame: both Giovanni Reyna, who was substituted at half-time after a poor performance, and Karim Adeyemi did not close the gaps consistently enough and kept getting Bensebaini into trouble. “It wasn’t easy for me on my side with Ramy because the Frankfurt team stood high and always played the ball deep,” said Adeyemi.

“Bensebaini played a very weak game,” summarized SPORT1 chief reporter Patrick Berger in a new edition of the podcast “Die Dortmund-Woche”: “Bensebaini didn’t have the defense under control at all. Frankfurt kept putting pressure on Chaibi and Marmoush. He was a blatant source of insecurity and is not yet the help he was hoping for. This is how the bank threatens him.”

Behind expectations

The 66-time national player has played twelve competitive games for BVB, and he has already had to miss one game due to an unnecessary yellow-red suspension. The defender, who is actually an offensive-minded defender, has not yet managed to score a direct goal in the Bundesliga or Champions League for the Black and Yellows.

For comparison: In the last Bundesliga season he had at least seven goals for weak Gladbach (six goals, one assist). For Sebastian Kehl, Bensebaini’s strength in forward play was a main reason why he was brought in. The Borussia wanted to replace Raphael Guerreiro (went to Bayern). The Portuguese was also vulnerable defensively, but much stronger offensively.

“He is a completely different type of player than Guerreiro,” says BVB expert Oliver Müller about Bensebaini in the podcast. “Especially when it comes to technology. But he can help BVB become more stable defensively.”

So far, Bensebaini has only succeeded to a limited extent…
