Rampant Homelessness and Destruction in Casper: Mayor Knell’s Troubling Account

Casper

A town is reported to have become a settlement homeless. They are called destroying a motel and leaving hundreds of kilograms of excrement on the streets.

Reported from Daily Star, Tuesday (5/9/2023), the Mayor of Casper, Wyoming, United States of America said that his city is inhabited by around 200 homeless people who wreak havoc on the streets and parks.

“They destroyed everything. It was terrible,” Mayor Bruce Knell told the Cowboy State Daily.

Even city employees told the media they had to haul around 230 kilograms human waste from around the city center.

“In desperate times, people do desperate things, and unfortunately we are the ones who have to deal with it,” Knell continued.

He also said that a group of squatters had moved into the Econo Lodge motel, a local vacant motel and caused millions of dollars worth of damage. The damage is estimated to be even greater than the reason the place was closed, namely due to flooding earlier this year.

This property was closed after photographs showed damage to the motel caused by a faulty water line. Knell said the building was uninhabitable and unsafe after the damage.

Previously, he also explained that the building had stopped operating as a motel in November last year.

The mayor explained that people had started hunkering down in a number of abandoned properties across the city, some of which had no water or electricity.

Some people reportedly also camped in local parks, on bicycle paths, or slept in their cars.

Knell argues that this sudden influx of arrivals can be attributed to the town’s existence of a homeless shelter. He also said that when people are turned away from the centres, some of them don’t really leave.

“There are certain sections of the homeless population, whether substance abuse or mental illness, that make them unwilling to conform to societal rules,” Knell said.

“When they do that, they are not allowed into the shelter, which means they just hang around our community and cause trouble.”
