Ramp of Fear: Repeated Accidents on Busan’s Downhill Road Raise Concerns

In Busan, there is a downhill road called ‘Ramp of Fear’.

Similar accidents occur every year while going down a steep slope.

The authorities’ response is limited to tinkering.

Reporter Hyeon-ho Ji covered the scene.

A 13-ton large cargo truck appears from the right.

It runs at high speed, pushes the cars in front and crashes into the bridge pier.

Seven people, including the driver of the vehicle hit by the truck, suffered serious injuries.

“It was the sound of thunder. It is a place where accidents occur so frequently that there seems to be a fatal accident at least once a year.”

The place where the accident occurred is near the Shinmora intersection.

From the Baekyang Tunnel exit, the road continues downhill for approximately 800m.

There are also sections with steep slopes of close to 10 degrees.

Accidents related to braking systems are frequent, especially in large vehicles such as trailers.

This time, the truck left the tunnel and ran downhill before entering a flat area and hitting five vehicles. It is believed that the brakes did not work.

All of the air pressure was released when the brakes were pressed on the slope.

″As I continued to come down from the Baekyang Tunnel, I exhausted the air brake, and because I was braking with the air out, I couldn’t brake.″

At the Shinmora intersection, in January 2020, a ready-mix concrete vehicle hit the bridge and the driver died.

Over the past three years, there have been 76 traffic accidents, including two fatal accidents, that have occurred in this area.

Preventive measures were taken, such as laying anti-slip pavers and posting warning signs, but they were of no use.

Residents have put forward demands such as banning the entry of large trucks and constructing bypass roads, but they are limited to half-baked solutions.

″I know that the slope is severe, but I don’t think there is a way to reduce it right now. Other than checking brake pads or something like that often…”

Local governments, police, and other related organizations have even conducted on-site inspections, promising to prepare measures to prevent recurrence, but doubts still remain as to whether effective measures will be developed.
