Sergio Ramos reached yet another special milestone in his long and successful career on Tuesday. The 34-year-old defender scored in the Champions League match with Internazionale (3-2 win) for the hundredth time on behalf of Real Madrid.
“Individual records are not the most important, but you don’t make your hundredth goal every day. Especially as a defender,” Ramos said after the game at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano. “It’s nice when your achievements and sacrifices are recognized in this way.”
The captain of Real signed for the 2-0 against Inter in the 33rd minute by heading from a corner from Toni Kroos. It was the 55th time that Ramos scored with his head in the Madrid shirt. He also used 21 penalties, shot twice from a free kick and scored 22 goals with his feet from open play. He needed 659 duels for his 100 hits and is the 21st Real player to reach the milestone.
“Let’s hope I can score many more goals that will help the team win,” said Ramos, who is in his sixteenth season with Real and has scored at least once in every season. The former player of Sevilla made his fourteenth goal in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Trainer Zinedine Zidane was again very enthusiastic about his captain, who has an expiring contract in Madrid. “We know Sergio is a fantastic footballer. I am very happy for him. He is our leader and of course we want him to stay with us forever. I have no doubt that he will renew his contract and continue to make history.”
