Ramón Margareto to Discuss Historical Milestones of Spanish Cinema at Ateneo de Madrid

The Palencia film director, painter and writer Ramón Margareto will give the conference “Historical milestones of Spanish cinema” this Saturday, March 2, at the recently restored Ateneo de Madrid. Furthermore, on the occasion of its 15th anniversary, “Memories of a Provincial Cinema” (Goya Award for Best Documentary Short Film) will be screened, also written and directed by Ramón Margareto. The event has been organized by the Historical Sciences Area, chaired by Francisco Cánovas (National History Prize).

The objective of the talk “Historical Milestones of Spanish Cinema” is to commemorate the 128th anniversary of Spanish Cinematography, highlighting its main films, directors, periods and cinematographic trends.

Among these events, Margareto has chosen to talk about masters such as Luis Buñuel and his masterpiece Viridiana (according to him the best film in the History of Spanish Cinema); by Segundo de Chomón; by Edgar Neville; by Luis García Berlanga; by Juan Antonio Bardem; by Carlos Saura or Pedro Almodóvar, promoter of the greatest international projection of Spanish Cinema.

Also of milestones such as the advent of Sound Cinema, Post-War Cinema, the NO-DO newsreel, cinema during the Franco regime, the Salamanca Conversations, the New Spanish Cinema, the cinema of the Transition, the Contestation Cinema, The Miró Law , the Cinema of Destape, the Democratic Congress of Spanish Cinema, the cinema of La Movida, the continuous state of financial crisis of the industry, the indifference of the public regarding the Cinema of the Transition, the eternal debate “Quality versus commercial success” , the return to Popular Comedy and the public’s new interest in watching Spanish Cinema, the continued state of financial crisis of Spanish Cinema, and New Technologies.

Margareto will also talk about the great talent of directors such as Álex de la Iglesia, Alejandro Amenábar, Juanma Bajo Ulloa, Julio Médem, Juan Antonio Bayona, Isabel Coixet…

“Memories of a provincial cinema” traces, through 55 films and 55 Spanish and international historical events, the sentimental history of the Ortega de Palencia cinema, since it opened its doors in 1937 with capacity for 1,200 spectators, until it underwent a renovation comprehensive to become a multiplex in 1997. That is to say, it is a sixty-year autobiography full of historical milestones in the History of Universal Cinema.
