It was already expected that Zerrouki would be selected by national coach Djamel Belmadi. The latter announced the 26-man selection to the world on Friday evening. In addition to Zerrouki, other European clubs are also missing players. For example, AS Roma temporarily loses Houssem Aouar and AC Milan has to do without Ismaël Bennacer for a while.
For Feyenoord, Zerrouki’s African Cup participation means that it cannot call on him for the first two competition matches of 2024, against NEC (January 14) and Vitesse (January 21) respectively. In addition, the cup match with either PSV or FC Twente (January 24) is also too early for Zerrouki. The inspector may also have to ignore the matches against Twente (Eredivisie) and AZ, but that depends on how Algeria performs in the tournament.

Africa’s largest country managed to win the tournament in 2019, but did not progress beyond the group stage in 2021. In the event that De Woestijnvossen reach the final, which will take place on February 11, Feyenoord will only have Zerrouki available again on February 15. Then the Rotterdam team, who will probably also have to give up Yankuba Minteh (to Gambia), will play the Europa League first match with AS Roma. Algeria will play against Angola, Burkina Faso and Mauritania in the group stage.
