The Academy of Performing Arts grants this distinction to performing arts professionals from Spain and other countries who have stood out throughout their career and who have contributed to the growth of this sector. Thus, the appointment of the director of the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo is a recognition of his determined efforts to establish a living dialogue between the performing arts, the creators and the public of Colombia and Spain.

This commitment has become evident, for example, in the visit of the most recognized artistic companies and creators of Spain to the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo: only in recent years have groups such as the National Ballet of Spain performed in Bogotá , the National Dance Company, the María Pagés Company, the Manuel Liñán Company, the dancer Eduardo Guerrero, the guitarists Juan Manuel Cañizares and Pablo Sainz-Villegas, and theater companies such as Tanttaka Teatro, just to name a few.

The support for the creation of joint projects between Colombian and Spanish institutions should also be highlighted, such as the play ‘Amo y crido’, co-production of the Teatro Mayor, the Teatro Libre and the Ibero-American Festival of the Golden Age of the Community of Madrid. Classics in Alcalá’ or the opera ‘Life is a Dream’, by Juan Pablo Carreño with a libretto by Iván Olano, in whose production the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo, the La Chapelle Harmonique orchestra and the Center National de la Musique participated, France, and the Ibero-American Festival of the Golden Age of the Community of Madrid ‘Classics in Alcalá’.

Behind these projects there has always been the firm conviction that in the performing arts there is a space of freedom to establish urgent reflections for the societies in which we live and, furthermore, to improve people’s living conditions.

The academy

The Spanish Academy of Performing Arts is an independent association founded in 2014 with the aim of promoting the progress of the entire performing arts sector. Throughout its history, it has managed to bring together more than 700 professionals from specialties such as theater, dance, circus, acting and stage creation, among others. The Academy also has 38 honorary academics, among whom are personalities such as the dancer and choreographer Eva Yerbabuena, the actor Antonio Banderas and the opera performer Plácido Domingo.

Since 2023, it began organizing the Talía Awards, which recognize excellence in this field, both from Spanish productions and from other Ibero-American or Spanish-speaking countries.

He has worked for more than four decades in the field of performing arts, management and cultural promotion. He was the first Minister of Culture of Colombia, founder and director of festivals such as the Ibero-American Theater Festival of Bogotá and the International Arts Festival of San José (Costa Rica), and director of the Sevilla Entre Culturas Festival, the Great Festival Ciudad de Mexico and the International Cervantino Festival. Additionally, between 2006 and 2009 he was the Director of Culture of the Ibero-American General Secretariat in Madrid, from where he promoted the creation of the Iberescena, Iberorquestas and Ibermuseos programs.

As a director and theater teacher he has directed more than 30 plays in Colombia and Mexico.

Since 2010, at the invitation of the Mayor’s Office of Bogotá and the Santo Domingo family, he has been General Director of the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo, a position he has held since its inauguration.
