On December 27, 1968, the two sacred monsters of Brazilian music Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil were arrested by the officers of the military dictatorship, then in power, for “insulting the homeland”. After a few weeks of detention in army headquarters, the two leading figures of tropicalism – an avant-garde movement and activist inspired by hippie culture – are condemned to exile. On the occasion of the presentation at the Venice Film Festival of the documentary “Narcissus Off Duty” which retraces the young years of Caetano Veloso, a look back at an arrest which has profoundly changed the history of Brazilian music.
