Rally in Munich on the anniversary of George Floyd’s death

Several hundred people remembered the violent death of George Floyd at a rally on Wednesday evening in Munich. The African-American died a year ago during an arrest in Minneapolis, USA, because a police officer had pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck for minutes.

Demand for tolerance and justice

The predominantly young people gathered on the square in front of the Giesingen train station. Some of the participants had posters with a portrait of George Floyd on them. Others carried signs that read “Black Lives Matter”.

The speakers demanded to stop discrimination, racism and racially motivated police violence and to work for justice, tolerance and equality worldwide. The group called “Black Lives Matter Munich” had called for the rally.

An important day in several ways

From the Giesingen train station, the demonstrators moved – accompanied by a larger police presence – to Baldeplatz, where the final rally took place. The organizers wanted to commemorate the “Liberation Day of Africa” and the founding of the anti-colonial organization for African unity on May 25, 1963, among other things.
