At the end of his tenure as Manchester United coach, Ralf Rangnick is self-critical.
Under the future Austrian team boss, the English record champions clearly missed a place in the Champions League and had to fear for participation in the Europa League until the end.
Ahead of Sunday’s final round at Crystal Palace (from 5 p.m. in the LIVE ticker >>>) the “Red Devils” are sixth.
Under Rangnick there were eleven wins, nine draws and eight bankruptcies in 28 games – the German did not deny that this record is disappointing for a club like Manchester United.
“We never came close to playing aggressive, proactive football. It has to do with physique,” said Rangnick, referring to the time factor. “Liverpool didn’t play that kind of football in their first season under Jurgen Klopp either. It took a year and a half and they finished eighth in their first season.”
Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t fit Rangnick’s philosophy
Rangnick also admitted that Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t really fit his philosophy.
“He scored some goals but – and I don’t blame him, he played great – he’s not a pressing monster. It’s the same for other players, so we had to make compromises. We never found the right balance between what we needed with the ball and what we needed without the ball.”
This is partly his fault.
“I expected that my coaching team would be able to develop the team more sustainably. Not only the players should be held responsible, we should too,” said Rangnick.
The 63-year-old nominated his first ÖFB squad for the four Nations League games in June on Monday. Forwards Marko Arnautovic and Sasa Kalajdzic, who, like Ronaldo, are not considered to be pressing players, will probably also be part of the squad.
