Rajapaksa languishes after fleeing Sri Lanka

Jakarta

Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled abroad. Rajapaksa fled on a military plane.

Rajapaksa fled with his wife and a bodyguard on the military plane Antonov-32. The plane took off from the main international airport for the Maldives on Wednesday morning local time, according to immigration sources.

The day after, Rajapaksa resigned. The spokesman for Sri Lanka’s speaker of parliament, Indunil Yapa, said Rajapaksa sent his resignation letter via email to the speaker of parliament.

Yapa said the resignation was forwarded to the country’s attorney general. Then, the attorney general will consider the legal implications before it is officially accepted.

Demo in Maldives

Dozens of demonstrators in the Maldives then welcomed Rajapaksa. They carried flags and banners denouncing Rajapaksa. Not only that, the demonstrators also asked the Maldives government not to provide shelter for Rajapaksa.

“Dear Maldivian friends, please urge your government not to protect criminals,” read a black and white banner held up by a Sri Lankan working in the country’s small capital.
