In New York, a new statue causes discussions. She reminds some critics of the gestures of an Islamist terrorist organization.
A new statue causes discussions in New York. The work “Unity” by the US artist Hank Willis Thomas consists of an almost seven meter high arm with a hand and an outstretched index finger and has recently been placed on the median of a street in the Brooklyn district, very close to the Brooklyn Bridge.
“This sculpture is a tribute and celebration of the unique and multifaceted character of Brooklyn,” said artist Thomas of the bronze work, which reportedly cost the City of New York around $280,000. “The spirit of Brooklyn has always been about striving for the top and connecting to the roots.”
Critics, on the other hand, see a religious symbol in the arm. Monument protection activist Todd Fine told CBS that the sculpture bears a “striking resemblance” to an Islamic gesture that represents the unity of God. “The Islamic State terrorist militia has used this symbol very prominently, but it is a widespread Muslim symbol.” The New York City Department of Culture rejected the criticism. “This work represents only positive things,” said Kendal Henry of the agency.
