The traffic jam barometer of the Flemish Traffic Center flirted with 300 km of traffic jams on the highways on Monday morning, the highest value since the beginning of this year. The basis is the rainy weather.
Since about 7:30 am the Traffic Center barometer has been well above the usual value. “That has everything to do with the soaking wet morning rush hour, in combination with the traditional crowds on Mondays,” explains Traffic Center spokesperson Peter Bruyninckx.
There were several accidents. “There were no serious incidents, but those that did lead to long traffic jams,” says Bruyninckx. “Often only one lane was blocked, as in two incidents in the Ghent area that have since been resolved. On the E17 towards Antwerp, a defective vehicle in Lokeren led to 10 km of traffic jams, and on the E40 to Brussels there was also a 10 km long queue in Merelbeke after a collision between several vehicles. In Limburg there was a traffic jam of 8 km on the E314 in Houthalen, towards the Dutch border.”
Furthermore, there are also the usual traffic jams around Antwerp and Brussels, which increase the barometer. Shortly before 9 am the traffic jam barometer had dropped to well over 240 km, still exceptional for that time of day.
