Rainy Season, Epidemiologist Asks People to Beware of DHF

During the rainy season, the survival of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito will be longer

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PURWOKERTO — Field epidemiologist from Jenderal Sudirman University (Unsoed), Yudhi Wibowo reminded local governments and the entire community to be aware of the increase in cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) during the rainy season.

“During the rainy season like today, the survival of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito will be longer if the humidity level is high, so people need to be more vigilant,” he said in Purwokerto, Banyumas, Sunday (23/1/2022).

He said one of the efforts that needed to be done was to intensify the movement to eradicate mosquito nests as an effort to anticipate dengue disease. The movement to eradicate mosquito nests, he said, needs to involve all levels of society to participate in maintaining environmental cleanliness to prevent Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes from breeding.

“The active role of the community to jointly carry out prevention efforts needs to be carried out, with the hope of preventing Aedes mosquitoes from breeding and ultimately suppressing cases of dengue fever,” he said.

To increase public awareness and understanding of the importance of the mosquito nest eradication movement, local governments need to increase socialization and education about all residents. “In addition to socializing the importance of implementing the Covid-19 prevention health protocol, local governments also need to increase education regarding prevention DBD and other diseases that have the potential to increase cases during the rainy season,” he said.

The lecturer at the Unsoed Faculty of Medicine added that the community needs to practice “3M Plus” regularly as an effort to prevent dengue fever. “3M’s practice is to drain, cover and reuse or recycle used goods that have the potential to become breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes,” he said.

Meanwhile, “Plus” is all forms of prevention activities, such as sprinkling larvicide powder, using mosquito repellent and mosquito repellent as well as regulating lighting and ventilation in the house. “Everything needs to be done routinely and together, residents need to keep each other clean in their respective environments. If every citizen carries out such preventive practices, it is hoped that it can reduce potential increase in dengue cases during the rainy season,” he said.
