Rainy Season Comes, Beware of Disease Attack on Plants

JAKARTA – JAKARTA – Collecting ornamental plants has become a new hobby that many have been involved in during the pandemic. However, not a few plants become sick and are attacked by pests during the rainy season.

Landscape architects explained that ornamental plants are very susceptible to disease, both from fungi and bacteria. Moreover, during the rainy season, pest attacks will increase.

Diseases caused by fungi are usually characterized by the appearance of blotches on the leaves. Meanwhile, if it is caused by bacteria, usually the branch or plant will wither. Disease attack on plants is considered to be much heavier than pest attack.

“Pests can be seen easily because the creatures are present, while if the disease occurs when the bacteria appear, we do not know where they come from and what kind,” explained the landscape architect, Meyga Fitri.

One of the causes of ornamental plants to be susceptible to disease is due to the close distance between plants and other plants. The tight spacing and uniform types of plants will cause contagious diseases.

“If one gets a disease, while the plants are uniform and closely spaced, then other plants will also be affected,” he added.

Other causes can also be caused by the transfer of disease through human hands. If a person holds a plant that is sick and then he holds another healthy plant, the disease will transfer to that healthy plant.

The process of treating diseased plants will not disappear 100% quickly. Treatment of the disease is only to suppress the breeding rate of fungi and bacteria. However, not to kill or eliminate these bacteria.
