Rainy Season Arrives, UGM Epidemiologist Reveals Disease Potential : Okezone Education

JAKARTA Rainy season is in sight. Epidemiologist Gadjah Mada University (UGM) dr. Citra Indriani asks public be aware of several diseases that have the potential to appear during the rainy season. Besides still dealing with Covid-19, communities in the homeland also face the threat of disease dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) which increases during the rainy season.

“There is a potential for an increase in dengue cases during the rainy season. This is because during the rainy season there is an increase in breeding places for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes so that the transmission is also higher,” he explained, launching UGM’s official website at ugm.ac.id, Tuesday (9/11/2021).

Citra said that 3M’s efforts, namely draining, closing, and burying need to be considered by the community in order to prevent DHF. In addition, other steps are also followed, such as using anti-mosquito lotion and also using mosquito nets to avoid the bite of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito.

Citra said, leptospirosis is also a disease that often occurs during the rainy season. Especially in areas where there is a lot of standing water or flood conditions.

People who live in flood-prone areas need to be aware of diseases caused by leptospira bacteria which are spread through rat urine. Leptospira bacteria can infect humans through the skin, especially if there is a wound.

“Try to always use footwear to avoid leptospirosis,” urged the FKKMK lecturer and researcher at the UGM Tropical Medicine Center.

In addition, the public is also advised to always take care of the surrounding environment so that it does not become a rat’s nest. Then, clean the drains around the house so they don’t get clogged and become puddles when it rains.

Next, if you are going to clean the waterways, it is attempted to use PPE to prevent infection with leptospira bacteria.

He added that diarrheal diseases are also prone to increase during the rainy season, especially in areas affected by floods. Floods usually cause the sanitation system to be disrupted so that there is the potential for an increase in cases of diarrhea in flood-affected areas.

Furthermore, Citra said, malaria in some malaria-endemic areas will usually increase when the rainy season comes. Then, another disease that usually appears is the common cold.

So what can be done to prevent infections from appearing during the rainy season? Citra said that people should maintain immunity, eat nutritious and balanced food, and live a clean and healthy lifestyle (PHBS).

In addition, the public is also still asked to comply with the 5M health protocol to prevent the transmission of Covid-19 because the spread of the corona virus has not stopped.
