Stockholm offered one of the wettest days of the year so far when the Diamond League came to town. The rain absolutely poured down on Stockholms Stadion, but both the active and the audience were brave and held out in the wet. And Fanny Roos and Daniel Ståhl showed that it was possible to get good results even in the rain.
The women’s bullet opened the rainy Diamond League night. Since Axelina Johansson was allowed to withdraw due to an injury earlier in the week, two Swedes started, Fanny Roos and Sara Lennman. Fanny Roos had a real shock right in the first attempt, 18.75, just two centimeters from her year’s best.
It was no longer for Fanny, but she stayed at 18.75, which gave her third place in the competition. The winner was Danniel Thomas-Dodd from Jamaica, who in the last round rose to first place when she clocked 19.04, one centimeter longer than second-placed Jessica Schilder from Germany.
Ståhl second behind Ceh
The men’s discus competition was beforehand one of the real highlights of the evening with the two Swedish stars Simon Pettersson and Daniel Ståhl on site, together with Kristjan Ceh from Slovenia and Andrius Gudzius from Lithuania.
Daniel showed off several long throws already in the warm-up and also took the lead in the second round when he threw 67.57. But Ceh responded immediately with 69.83 and took over the lead.
Simon Pettersson did not get to throw, but threw five invalid throws and had to make do with those throws, while the top three had to throw the sixth and final round as well. It was Ceh, Guszius and Daniel Ståhl. There was no increase for any of the throws, but Daniel’s throw was long and could have been a lead throw if he managed to stay in the ring. Daniel was second in his 67.57.
– It was wonderful to throw here, but I was a little eager today, Daniel said after the competition.
Three Swedish women in the discus competition
Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic showed right away the level she wanted the women’s discus competition to be when she hurled the discus 64.37 in the first round.
There were three discus Swedish women at the Stockholm stadium, Emma Ljungberg, Caisa-Marie Lindfors and Emma Sralla. We have mostly seen Caisa-Marie and Emma compete in the USA this year, but now the Swedish audience would get to see them live.
Emma Sralla did not have a good day in the discus ring, but had to leave the competition with two failed throws and one at 38.81, a good distance from her year’s best of 59.71.
Emma Ljungberg and Caisa-Marie Lindfors were seventh and eighth after four rounds and had to throw on. The two Swedes remained in those positions even when all seven of their rounds were completed. Emma Ljungberg was seventh in 55.86 and Caisa-Marie Lindfors eighth in 54.12.
The men’s high jump was able to be completed despite the perpetual rain and two Swedes got to the start, Melwin Lycke Holm and Fabian Delryd. Both entered the race in 2.08, which Melwin managed in first, which Fabian did not. He also did not succeed in the two following attempts, but tore himself out at the entrance height. Melwin Lycke-Holm also didn’t get to the heights in the heavy rain, but pulled out in 2.12.
Tilde Johansson seventh in the long jump
Khaddi Sagnia had to withdraw from tonight’s Diamond League due to problems with a knee and was replaced by Tilde Johansson. She was pitted against, among others, Ese Brume from Nigeria, German Malaika Mihambo and Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk from Ukraine.
Tilde started with a completely unsuccessful jump, but in the second round she jumped 6.33. She increased to 6.36 in the fourth round and was in seventh place heading into the fifth. She did not manage to increase to jump the last jump, but stayed seventh. Larissa Iapichino from Italy won in 6.69.
Climate activists sabotaged the 400 meter hurdle
Right at the finish line of the 400 meter hurdles with, among others, Karsten Warholm, large parts of the courses were blocked by climate activists, a sight that has unfortunately become common at large sporting events. The runners escaped without injury, luckily.
– We have seen that this has happened at other events and were prepared. We knew what to do if that happened, then we can’t have a picket fence around the whole Stadium at an athletics competition. We do not think that is justified. But we did what we could and were there quickly and tried to counter it, says competition director Jan Kowalski to SVT.
