Milan Pride 2023: Rainbow Families Demand Urgent Action from Municipality
Over 300,000 people flooded the streets of Milan on Saturday afternoon, creating a vibrant rainbow wave for Pride 2023. The event served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for the full recognition of LGBT rights. Elly Schlein, the secretary of the Pd, expressed concern about the potential regression of rights not only in Italy but also across Europe under the current government.
The Pride procession was led by Rainbow Families, who carried a “train” filled with children from same-parent couples. This year’s Pride held even greater significance for the group, as the Court of Milan recently halted the transcription of birth certificates for children of same-parent families. Angela Diomede, the Lombard spokesperson for Rainbow Families, emphasized the importance of the Pride event in relaunching their battle for recognition.
In addition to Rainbow Families, asexual individuals were also present at Milano Pride. One young girl explained that asexuals do not experience sexual attraction to anyone, regardless of gender or orientation. She highlighted the need for respect and understanding, as asexual individuals often face discrimination due to their lack of physical attraction.
The Rainbow Families displayed a banner on their wagon with the inscription, “Love is not canceled in Court,” in response to the Court of Milan’s decision to annul the registration of a birth certificate for a child born to two fathers through surrogate motherhood.
The procession featured around thirty floats, including companies and political parties such as the Democratic Party, the 5 Star Movement, +Europe, the Italian Left, and the CGIL. The Democratic Party’s float carried flyers with the message, “If by chance the government falls, I’ll move a little further.” Another float depicted Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as a character from the TV series The Handmaid’s Tale, with the word “Prejudice” written alongside it. The event also included references to Alessandro Manzoni’s classic novel, The Betrothed, with a dedicated cart honoring the characters Renzo and Lucio.
Elena Mantovani, one of the founders of the Rainbow Families association, reiterated their commitment to fighting for the recognition of their children. She emphasized that stepchild adoption has been deemed insufficient by international courts, and they will continue their battle until their children are recognized at birth like all other Italian children. Mantovani called on the government, particularly Giorgia Meloni’s administration, to acknowledge the changing nature of families and address their concerns.
The Pride parade in Milan served as a powerful platform for Rainbow Families and other marginalized groups to demand equal rights and recognition. As the event continues to unfold, updates on their fight for justice will be provided.
