Raina Kabaivanska will receive the title Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters of France (Commandeur al`ordre des Arts et des Lettres).
French Minister of Culture Frédéric Mitterrand will award Raina Kabaivanska with the title Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters (Commandeur al`ordre des Arts et des Lettres). The awarding ceremony will take place today, December 9, at Villa Medici in Rome, the press center of the NBU announced.
France has decided to award the highest degree of the Order of Arts and Letters to Raina Kabaivanska for high merits in spreading culture and music in France and around the world. Holders of this prestigious title include Thomas S. Eliot, Bob Dylan, Clint Eastwood, Vaclav Havel, Umberto Eco, Rudolf Nureyev, Meryl Streep, Elton John.
During her more than 50-year career, the world-famous Bulgarian soprano triumphed many times in the largest French opera houses – the Grand Opera in Paris, Marseille, Toulouse, Aix-en-Provence and others. Over half a century on stages all over the world, Raina Kabaivanska has interpreted all the great composers – from the 18th century (Spontini and Gluck) and the melodrama of the 19th century, to contemporary ones such as Janacek, Poulenc and Rota.
Raina Kabaivanska has been leading a master class in opera singing and interpretation at the New Bulgarian University for 12 years, where she also established a fund for scholarships for young opera singers to study in Bulgaria and Italy. Students of the Primate will perform the main roles in the opera “Bohemia” by Giacomo Puccini at the Sofia Opera and Ballet on December 10 and 11, as DUMA wrote.
Raina Kabaivanska is also the recipient of Bulgaria’s most prestigious honors – the Stara Planina Order, and is a Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of the Italian Republic.
