Torrential rain that fell on Tuesday evening in Brazil prevented Spaniard Carlos Alcaras, ranked second in the world, from defeating his opponent, the owner of the land, Mateus Alves, after advancing 6-4, 5-3 in the Rio Tennis Tournament.
And the match was stopped when the serve was with Alcaras, the defending champion, and the result indicated that he advanced 5-3 in the second set in front of an opponent who showed fierce resistance in the wake of a large crowd on the “Goga Kuerten” court.
Alcaras, who was finally crowned with his seventh title in his career by winning the Buenos Aires League last week, will return to the stadium with the aim of settling the match in his favor and reaching the final price.
Alcaras (19 years) was absent from the yellow ball stadiums for nearly 4 months due to injury, before he started his return with a victory in the Argentine capital, to face in Rio the winner of the match between Italian Fabio Fognini and Chilean Thomas Barrios Vera, knowing that the match was stopped with the first advancing 6- 2 and 5-2.
The rain also led to the postponement of the other five matches scheduled for Tuesday, according to what the officials of the Rio Games announced on the official website on Twitter.
Earlier, Britain’s Cameron Nouri, ranked 12th in the world, qualified for the final price by defeating Argentine Juan Manuel Cnerondolo 7-5, 6-1, to set a date with another Brazilian, Thiago Montero, who won with difficulty over Austrian Dominic Tim 6-1, 3-6, 7. -6 (7-2).
“I will have to rest and improve my game so that I can beat him,” said Nuri, who hopes to match Alcaras in the final to avenge his loss in Buenos Aires.
Previous editions of the Rio Games have been disrupted by bad weather, and the cancellation of matches comes as torrential rain lashed Brazil over the weekend, killing at least 44 people in landslides.
