A storm system that brought rain to the tri-state area overnight is easing, leaving only a few lingering showers for the rest of Thursday.
A flood watch remains in effect for parts of New Jersey until 7 p.m. Thursday with flood warnings in effect for low-lying areas in parts of Connecticut and Long Island.
Many streams and rivers will continue to rise through the early part of Thursday, with some reaching minor flood stage, but at this point, none are forecast to reach moderate flood stage.
The heaviest rain and flooding has ended and the rain will remain until Thursday night.

This week’s system comes days after flooding hit the New York area, trapping dozens of people in several cities, while 60 mph winds uprooted trees and left hundreds of thousands of people without power across the region. .
Parts of New Jersey saw nearly 6 inches of rain fall in about 12 hours with that storm.

Once the system passes, temperatures will drop. We will go from being in the high 50s (uncommon for this time of year) to the mid 40s by the middle of next week, which is more typical.
There is still a chance of some light showers on Friday and early Saturday.
Sunday, New Year’s Eve, is our best chance for some sunshine to close out 2023. The evening festivities will be dry and cool, after temperatures near 50 degrees during the day.
And we will start 2024 with calm, dry weather for the first week.
