Railway network, 50 municipalities in the province of Salerno “cut”

A third of the municipalities that make up the province of Salerno they have no accessibility and are not close to the railway network. In the global discussion on sustainable mobility that is increasingly pushing towards the use of public and “green” transport such as the train, the OpenPolis analysis (elaborated on data provided by Istat) highlights that in the Salerno area, to achieve the goal of easy and at the same time environmentally friendly mobility, there is still a lot of work to do. A factor that should not be underestimated since, as emerges from the dossier, access to the railway network also represents a very important driving force for the economy.

Data from the province

The ease with which mobility infrastructures can be reached is given by two main elements: accessibility (the ability to arrive at the station within a maximum time) and proximity (the presence or absence of an infrastructure within a certain time). In total, based on the population of the centers “stained” by the difficulty of accessing the railway network, 92,253 Salernitans are forced to deal with this inconvenience for a total of 50 municipalities. The largest center is Teggiano (7,186 residents), the smallest Angel Valley (202 inhabitants): in the middle, many Municipalities of the most internal area of Cilento, of the Vallo di Diano but also of the Amalfi Coast and of the most hilly part of the Piana del Sele. But this is “only” the most complicated situation: another 41 municipalities, in fact, have accessibility to the railway network even though it is not close (in practice the line for regional trains is there but at a distance of more than twenty kilometers): in this case, the largest Municipality to experience this inconvenience is Campagna (16,562 residents) but the list includes other medium-sized centres in the Salerno area such as Giffoni Valley Plain, Montecorvino Rovella, Consilina Hall. Another 13 areas of our province see the railway network as inaccessible but close, or well connected by other infrastructures (such as roads): among these, many centres of the Agro stand out, such as ScafatiThe “ideal” situation is valid only for 57 municipalities in the province of Salerno that have an accessible and nearby railway network.
