Raid at PostNL in Mechelen and Wommelgem after reports of fraud… (Wommelgem)

Wommelgem, Mechelen

On Monday morning, a number of social inspectors raided courier company PostNL in Wommelgem and Mechelen. The action comes after reports of drivers who would drive without a license and minors who would be employed.

At 6 o’clock this morning, the social inspection services, police and customs raided a PostNL depot in Wommelgem. A little later this also happened in a depot in Mechelen. Police have sealed several vans. Drivers were asked to return home.

The results of the campaign are not yet known. The inspection services are investigating, among other things, subcontractors who allow drivers to drive without a driver’s license and minors aged 13 to 14 who have to deliver packages from the vans.

“Drivers are the modern slaves”

The Belgian Transport Workers’ Union (BTB-ABVV) published a black book on Monday explaining how Post NL, GLS and DPD organize themselves in a distasteful way for the delivery of parcels.

“These companies do not employ a single driver and work exclusively through subcontracting,” explains Tom Peeters, Deputy Federal Secretary for the BTB. “They push off any responsibility and squeeze their drivers down to the last drop. Testimonials from (former) drivers make it painfully clear that they are the modern slaves of these companies, while there is no way they can make their voices heard.”

BTB-ABVV therefore became a civil party in the lawsuit initiated by the public prosecutor’s office against Post NL and GLS.
