Rahul Mangkoothil won the Palakkad assembly election by a landslide. In Chelakkara, the Left maintained its leadership with UR Pradeep. Priyanka Gandhi won the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency with the highest majority in Kannaingam.
Palakkad/Wayanad/Thrissur: UDF’s Rahul Mankoothil won the stronghold of Palakkad in the assembly by-elections. BJP candidate C Krishnakumar, who lost votes in power centres, came second. UDF came first in Palakkad Municipal Corporation too. LDF candidate P Sarin was relegated to the third position.
The Left Front retained its leadership in the Chelakara Assembly by-election. LDF candidate UR Pradeep also won. The CPM leaders responded that UR Pradeep’s victory proved that there was no anti-government sentiment. BJP vote rate increased in Chelakkara. PV candidate Anwar Sudhir won around 4000 votes in Chelakkara.
Priyanka Gandhi won the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency by-election with a record majority. Priyanka’s big win in Kanniyangam with more than four lakh votes. Priyanka Gandhi replied that she would reach the constituency within two days and is grateful to the voters of Wayanad. There was a big drop in the leftist votes in Wayanad. Sathyan Mokeri’s vote share was limited to 22 percent. BJP candidate Navya Haridas could not make much progress either.
Rahul won with a record majority
UDF candidate Rahul Mankootil won the Palakkad by-election with a record majority. Rahul has won Mangoota with a majority of 18840 votes. Rahul, who reached Palakkad from Pathanamthitta, now reached the Legislative Assembly in Mangkoot. While winner Rahul got 58389 votes in Mangoota, BJP candidate C Krishnakumar who came second got 39549 votes. LDF candidate P Sar got 37293 votes.
Rahul’s victory is more than what he achieved in Shafi Param. LDF is in third position. Rahul’s lead increased significantly when the votes were counted in Pirairi Panchayat. Here alone, Rahul got a lead of 4124 votes against BJP candidate Krishnakumar who got 6775 votes in Pirairi. Rahul has a lead of 10291 votes when the ninth round of counting is over. Palakkad UDF workers started celebrating after Rahul’s landslide victory.
Priyanka surpasses Rahul Gandhi’s majority in Kanniyangam
In the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, Priyanka Gandhi defeated her opponents in all counting rounds and won in Kanniyangam with a majority of over 410,931 votes. Priyanka’s landslide victory surpasses the majority achieved when Rahul Gandhi contested in Wayanad in 2024. There was a campaign that the vote percentage would at least affect Priyanka’s majority, but as soon as the counting of votes started, it was clear that Priyanka’s majority would cross four lakh. Rahul Gandhi won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with a majority of 3,64,422 votes with 6,47,445 votes. Priyanka Gandhi won the highest majority in the by-election. While Priyanka got a total of 622338 votes, LDF’s Sathyan Mokeri got 211407 votes. BJP’s Navya Haridas got 109939 votes.
LDF retained Chelakkara through UR Pradeep
LDF’s UR Pradeep won in the Chelakara by-election with a majority of 12201 votes. Pradeep’s advance was made by making UDF candidate Ramya Haridas ineligible since counting of postal votes started. In Chelakkara, the candidate PV Anwar could not make any movement either. UR Pradeep got 64,827 votes. Ramya Haridas got 52,626 votes. BJP candidate K Balakrishnan has secured 33609 votes in Chelakkara. Independent candidate PV Anwar Sudhir NK could get only 3920 votes.
In Chelakkara, the left movement was visible from the beginning. Varavoor Panchayat votes were counted first. The UDF has fielded Ramya Haridas in the hope of a coup in the constituency which the LDF has held as a stronghold. But Ramya Haridas could not make the expected progress. Through Balakrishnan, the BJP was able to make significant gains in the constituency. A BJP candidate could get 24,045 votes in the 2021 assembly elections.
It is also an achievement for UR Pradeep that he was able to increase the majority he got when he contested in 2016. In 2016, Pradeep won with a majority of 10,200 votes. When K Radhakrishnan came in 2021, the LDF was able to increase its majority to 39,400. With Chelakkara’s victory, there is no anti-incumbent sentiment coming from the LDF leaders.
