Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Lifter Rahmat Erwin Abdullah set a record and won gold in the men’s 81 kilogram class at the 2023 World Weightlifting Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Monday (11/9).
Rahmat, who competed in class B, only made one attempt in the snatch. The son of former lifter Erwin Abdullah ‘only’ lifted 145 kilograms. Even though he still had two more classes in the snatch, Rahmat did not take them.
The Makassar-born athlete then performed impressively in the clean and jerk. Rahmat immediately kicked off with a lift of 190 kilograms. On the second occasion Rahmat increased his weight to 200 kilograms.
Rahmat made sure to break the clean and jerk record on the third occasion. A load weighing 209 kilograms can be lifted smoothly and flawlessly.
The 209 kilogram force is a new world record. Previously, the record for the clean and jerk belonged to Bulgarian athlete Karlos Nasar with a weight of 208 kilograms.
In total, Rahmat has a lift weighing 354 kilograms. This record was the best among the athletes competing in classes B and C, but Rahmat had to wait several hours to get a medal waiting for the results of the lifters in class A.
Rahmat’s strength in the clean and jerk cannot be matched by class A lifters who even have difficulty lifting weights under 200 kilograms. Gold in the clean and jerk is safe in Rahmat’s hands.
It’s just that Italian athlete Oscar Reyes was able to lift 193 kilograms in the clean and jerk and made a total lift weighing 356 kilograms after lifting a barbell weighing 163 kilograms during the snatch.
Rahmat also had to settle for second place and got silver in the total force category.
Rahmat is the first lifter from Indonesia to win gold at this year’s World Championships. Previously, Eko Yuli Irawan won two silvers in the 67 kilogram class.
To date, Indonesia has won a total of 1 gold and three silvers at the 2023 World Weightlifting Championships.
