NEW YORK – Multiple firefighters were injured while battling a raging four-alarm blaze at a building on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
The incident occurred at about 5 am Tuesday in a mixed residential and commercial building located at 1842 1st Avenue, according to authorities.
The flames would have started in the restaurant on the first floor “Dragon One” and would have spread rapidly, so that more than 160 firefighters came to the scene.
Four firefighters had to be hospitalized after parts of a roof on the first floor collapsed on them, according to authorities. The injuries are not life threatening and all are expected to recover.
The exact number of people evacuated was not released, but firefighters had to force their way into the “Dragon One” restaurant and cut off parts of the roof to gain access and put out the fire.
By noon, the firefighters had to return to the campus due to fears that the flames would charge out again.
The cause of the fire was not immediately released.
