Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal, who returned to the tennis courts after a year on Tuesday, spoke to El Pais about the rivalry he had with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic for many years.
The Spanish phenomenon and 22-time Grand Slam winner said on that occasion that matches against Federer evoked much more emotion in him than matches against Djokovic.
In his interview, the part about the differences between himself, Federer and Djokovic and their successful tennis careers attracted attention.
“We were all able to reinvent ourselves, that’s why there was such an intense rivalry. Federer and I always managed to surprise each other on the court,” said Nadal and then focused on Djokovic.

“Djokovic also surprised, he was developing his game, but he didn’t need to develop it the way the two of us did. He didn’t suffer as many injuries. The only thing that forced him to improve his game was opponents, not physical problems. That’s the difference,” said the Spaniard.
Nadal returned to the tennis circuit after a break of almost a year with a 1st round singles victory over Dominic Thiem at the Brisbane tournament. Djokovic will face Alex de Minaur from Australia in the quarterfinals of the United Cup on Wednesday.
